March 2010

NEWS AND NOTES

SPRING, SPRING SPRING.......IT'S COMING !!!!!!!!!!
Don't forget to "Spring" Forward on March 14th!!!
Don't Forget to also change the batteries in your smoke detectors!

We are hoping that we have seen the last of the cold.
We will be sending slippers and snow gear home the week
of March 15th,  It's time to check your child's extra clothes
box and replace clothing as needed.  The children have grown
and the fall clothes probably won't fit.  We will be outside
on a daily basis and ask you to dress your child appropriately.
Proper shoes are very important for the safety of the children.
Gym shoes are the best.

Our 4's and 5's are participating in
two reading programs in the month of March,
BOOKIT
sponsored by Pizza Hut® and
Read Across America
sponsored by Target®.
Take time to read today!

Easy Organization Tips

By organizing the items and toys in your child's room or play area, you're helping her becomes more independent and resourceful.
Here are four of our favorite ideas:

Save plastic baby-wipe containers to store art supplies like markers, crayons and brushes.  Your child can help decorate and label each container.
Hang hammock-like, stretchy material in a corner to store stuffed animals or dolls in.  Hang it low so that children can reach the toys.
Use a clear over-the-door shoe organizer to store your child's collections.  label the dividers with fun facts about the contents.
When it's time to get rid of an old dresser, save the drawers.  Attach wheels to the bottoms to create roll-away, under-the-bed storage bins.

WHAT'S HAPPENING...

Our Teddy Bears, the two's ...
Since February is the month of love we started off talking about America
and did some activities to celebrate our President's birthdays.
We used play money to "shop" and sang songs with the American flag.
During that week we also talked about shadows in hopes that the groundhog
wouldn't see his...but he did :(  Later we celebrated Valentine's Day and had a classroom party.
Thank you for all of your special treats!
After all that candy we talked about healthy habits, like brushing our teeth!
We practiced on paper then brushed our own teeth.
Everyone did a great job!
We ended the month practicing the names of our body parts and what they are used for.
 We even made feet puppets.
We will start March talking about Dr. Suess.
Later in the month we will start to talk about wind and hopefully Spring! :)

The Bunny Bunch, the threes ...
The Three’s had a great February!
We talked about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.
We made a cake in the shape of Lincoln’s Log Cabin and
Washington Tarts for George Washington.
We talked about how important it is for us to brush our teeth and go to the Dentist.
In March we will continue learning our letters and numbers.
We will talk about Dr.Seuss and have a week to review manners.
We have a lot of fun activities planned for St. Patrick's Day.
At the end of March we will talk about changes in the weather.
We will continue to have fun cooking projects like Green Eggs and Ham for Dr.Seuss’ B-Day.

Our 4's, our Junior Kindergarten ...
February has been a whirlwind of learning and playing.
We began the month off with learning about America, the presidents,
the states and the Pledge of Allegiance in recognition of Lincoln’s Birthday,
Washington’s Birthday and President’s Day.
We jumped right into Valentine’s Day celebrations for the second week.
We learned how to make many shapes and sizes of hearts by folding and cutting.
We made many Valentine’s cards for our loved ones and ended the week
with a delightful Valentine’s Party. The next week, we learned all about teeth
in recognition of National Dental Health Month. We learned about the parts of our teeth
and how to care for them properly to keep them healthy and strong.
The last week of the month was all about healthy bodies and the Olympics.
We learned about the geography of where the Olympics are taking place,
in Vancouver, Canada. We learned about many of the sports involved in Winter Olympics.
We learned about how the athletes stay healthy and strong.
We had a fieldtrip to see the play “The Little Engine That Could.”
That helped us learn about how to persevere and practice to get
better at anything we want to accomplish.
We began “Book-It,” a healthy competition to see how many books each child is reading.
We also began our Scott Foresman reading program with individual workbooks
to go along with the lessons. We are practicing our songs from Ms. Tanya’ music class
in preparation for our Spring Concert.
What a month! Next month should prove to be just as busy and fun.

Our 5's, our Kindergartener's..
February was a month full of fun!
We learned about weather changes and celebrated Groundhog’s Day;
we had our Valentine party and learned about giving and receiving friendship.
We had history lessons and learned about our presidents and their job;
we also noticed that President’s faces are on the dollar bills and
we learned the value of the bills according to the President’s picture on it!
This was fun!
We talked about dental health and ways to keep our teeth healthy:
by regularly visiting the dentist, eating loads of vegetables and fruits,
and brushing and flossing our teeth twice a day!
We learned the names of our front, pointed, and back teeth and what we do with them!
Now everybody wants to be a dentist!
We started the Book It Reading Program and so far,
we are winning the competition! Good job, fives! Keep it up!
March will start with a favorite event: Dr Seuss’ Birthday!
We will celebrate by reading all of his books which Skokie Public Library
was so kind to provide for us, by cooking green eggs and ham (Yumm!),
and by trying to write our own rhyming story just like him!
We will immerse ourselves in the wonderful and magical world of fairytales and fables.
We will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by making a delicious Shamrock smoothie
and learn the story behind the celebration!
We will also talk about health and nutrition and go to the theatre to see
“Jack Sprat Low Fat World” on Tuesday, March 16th.
Week s 4 and 5 of the month will be dedicated to the new season - our favorite, spring!
We will plant some flowers and vegetable plants.
We will talk about the reason why seasons change, have fun dying eggs, and create loads of spring crafts!
