TINY TOT TIMES

July and August 2009

NEWS AND NOTES

Our Summer activities continue. The children are enjoying summer fun and outdoor activities.  We do spend more time outside.  We can only apply sunscreen and insect repellent if you supply it and complete the ointment permission slip. It would be a big help if you would apply sunscreen in the morning before your child comes to school. All products must be labeled with your child's name.  Also, please check your child's clothing.  We should have a full set of clothing.  This full set of clothing should include long and short pants, shirt, undergarments, socks and a sweatshirt or lightweight jacket.

INFANT AND TODDLER READING MILESTONES**

  BIRTH TO SIX MONTHS OLD
Newborns are calmed by the rhythmic sounds of lullabies and nursery rhymes.  These will be their first stories.  A baby may even begin to recognize a song or rhyme if you repeat it other enough.  By the time she is four months old, the baby will show interest in books and start to explore them by chewing or throwing them.  At this age, a baby needs sturdy vinyl or cloth books that can survive chewing and are not easily torn.

  6 TO 12 MONTHS OLD
During this period babies become less interested in mouthing books and more interested in the story.  You can promote a baby's interest in books by looking at books with him and talking about the pictures, especially those that interest the baby.  Invite an eight-or-nine month-old baby to turn the pages.  If the baby is being raised to be bilingual, this is a good time to introduce objects and tell her the words for them in both languages.

  12 TO 18 MONTHS OLD
Babies delight in "reading: together with adults.  A baby will turn pages and name pictures of familiar objects.  She may begin to enjoy books that tell simple stories.  Because babies are natural explorers, they love books such a Pat the Bunny, which they can touch and sniff while listening to the story.

all of the different places we could take a vacation to.
For science we made scented playdough.
We had a week where we made lots of things for Dad.
Sensory Week was fun. We made pizza bagels, and painted with our fingers.
Mext month will be exploding with fun! We will bake a red, white and blue cake.
We also have many fun art projects planned.

Our 4's, the Junior Kindergarten...
This month was filled with many activities.
We learned about the plants and animals in the rainforests.
We practiced every day for our moving up celebration, which was a BIG SUCCESS!
For our cooking projects, we had a potluck snack,
made tropical rainforest salad, fruit kabobs and monkey tails.
We went to the park and hugged trees for National Hug-A-Tree Day.
We made special gifts for Father's Day.
As soon as we turned around, summer camp started!
So far, we have made elephant masks, flip-flops, and sun catchers.
Next month will be filled with lots of outdoor activities, including field trips,
walks to the park, water days and load of FUN!

Our 5's, the Kindergartener's...
Summer sun... Oh what fun.
To start off our summer camp we made torn paper suns.
Along with the hot summer sun comes water days and days at the beach.
To celebrate this we made our own flip flops and foot prints in the sand.
Now that summer camp is here we get to enjoy a field trip each week.
