NEWS AND NOTES

SPRING.......!!!!!!!!!!

Spring is really here!  Please check your child's bag of clothing
and exchange for lighter and most likely bigger clothes.
We will be outside on a daily basis and ask you to
please dress your child appropriately.
Proper shoes are very important for the safety of the children
and gym shoes are the best.

Spring Fling...

It's time to think about Spring things...
things like walking in the woods,
buying seed packets and getting the bikes ready,
clean out a closet, give the dog a bath,
look for bird nests, fly a kite,
look at the stars and find a satellite.

THE WEEK OF THE YOUNG CHILD
April 3-9.

The Week of the Young Child is a time to recognize that children's opportunities are our responsibilities, and to recommit ourselves to ensuring that each and every child experiences the type of early environment--at home, at child care, at school, and in the community--that will promote their early learning.

Today  we know more than ever before about the importance of children's
earliest years in shaping their learning and development. Yet, never before
have the needs of young children and their families been more pressing.
The Week of the Young Child is a time to recognize that children's opportunities
are our responsibilities, and to recommit ourselves to ensuring that each and
every child experiences the type of early environment--at home, at child care,
at school, and in the community--that will promote their early learning.

April is Early Literacy Month at the Skokie Library

Early Literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write. Although libraries and teachers model early literacy behavior in Storytime, the Every Child Ready to Read initiative of the public library Association and the Association for Library Service to Children shows that merely attending Storytime is not enough for a child to grasp early literacy skills.  Primary caregivers must read one-on-one with children and engage them in other early literacy behaviors to help the child get ready to read.
Throughout April, the Youth Services Department will offer several activities and workshops for children, parents and caregivers in an effort to help make a difference in the lives of future readers.

The Village of Skokie Health Department
has rescheduled our Vision and Hearing
Screening for Monday, April 18

EARTH DAY
April 22, 2005

On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was held.
People all over the country made promises to help the environment.
Everyone got involved and since then, Earth Day has spread all over the planet.
People all over the world know that there are problems we need to work
on and this is our special day to look at the planet and see what needs changing. Isn't it great?
One person had an idea and kept working until everyone began working together to solve it.
See what happens when people care about our world?

The Eggs Are Coming....April 5th.

The Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes
are involved in the Incubation Embryology project sponsored by the University of Illinois Cooperative Extension Service and 4H.
With patience and observation our young embryologists will witness an “eggstraordinary” event—the emergence of newly hatched eggs. Our due date is April 25th. Be sure to ask your child about embryology, incubate, candling and how we are preparing for the chicks.
Hats off to our wonderful teachers
for providing this wonderful learning experience for our children.

WHAT'S HAPPENING...

Our Teddy Bears, the two's ...
created many circle projects including a circle collage during shape week.
After talking about circles and triangles the children painted ice cream cones.
The children added a face, arms and legs to "Sammy Square."
The children also created sun catchers using all of the shapes and colors they
had learned during the week. To wrap up "Shape Week" they made a shape book
that followed the same method as Brown, Bear ,Brown Bear, by Eric Carle.
The children decorated Easter eggs with pastel colors using a spray painting method.
They also added ears, a face and fur to their Easter bunnies.
Our Easter baskets were a two-day project.  First the children used a marble
rolling method to paint baskets, then they decorated eggs using tissue paper pieces.
They also enjoyed gluing different colored feathers on their Easter chicks.

The Bunny Bunch, the threes ...
for Color Week experimented with mixing colors when we marble painted.
We also made edible Fruit Loop rainbows.  During Bunny Week we made
fluffy bunnies and tie-dyed tissue paper Easter eggs.
We have fun during our egg hunt on the playground.

Our 4's, our Junior Kindergarten ...
made craters using Plaster of Paris and we painted
them the colors we thought they were.
We made "space food" using a dehydrator and the children enjoyed the dry fruit.
We made Easter Baskets and glued sand down on the Easter eggs.
We made Easter bunnies using cotton balls and we colored them.
We used shaving cream and paint to decorate our hanging eggs.
During International Week we learned about many different cultures.
Russia and Japan were a few of the many cultures we learned about.

Our 5's, our Kindergartener's...
talked about space and we made our own constellations.
We water painted egg shapes for our windows.
we made Easter baskets to hold the eggs we dyed for Easter
Spring is here so we sorted Fruit Loops and made a rainbow.
